I have to do a science fair project for school. The experiment was what fabric insulates the best, wet and dry (wool was by far the best wet, and wool and polyester were about even dry). It should have something to do with hypothermia, because that's the kind of reason for this--people need to know what fabric to wear in cold weather so they won't die of hypothermia. Austenite is the phase of NiTi stable at high temperature, while martensite is more stable at room temperature. Although austenite is the less dense phase, it is more rigid than martensite. At room temperature, the metal is in the martensite phase. When pressure is applied, the metal atoms easily slide by one another, and the shape changes. Heating the metal to about 50oC changes it to the rigid austenite phase. The dislocations between the crystalline grains of the metal (see topic "Simulation of Dislocations in Metals") will return to their original positions, and the metal will "remember" its original shape. Upon cooling, the metal returns to the martensite phase, but will retain its shape until pressure is applied.

About 15 years ago or so there was a popular woman's pant that had straps that your feet went into. I don't think the popularity with them lasted, and I think a lot of people thought they looked ridiculous. For the life of me, I cannot remember the name. Thanks a lot!
