I learned about it in school and forgot the name. I remember a poem in that style; a man describing how he is eating his soup.
What is the name of a writing style that is all about details? Explaining every step of what you are doing?
An instruction.
A narrative.
A tech manual.
Reply:Perhaps you're referring to "expository writing" or "exposition"? Although it's not really writing step-by-step details per se, although it can involve that. It's an expression of intent or setting up background information.
In the right hands, the technique can become a good technique to keep a narrative brisk and energetic. Hemingway was known to be adept at this, although this applies to fiction. As far as poets go, well, I guess one could say Homer in The Iliad used expository writing when he listed the lineage of great Greek family names. I tended to skip those parts to get to the actual meat of the story--who wants to read pages and pages of seemingly endless Greek names? I don't think exposition lends itself to poetry very well, but maybe someone out there can find exceptions.
