What is the name of the liquid plastic that is used in acrylics as its binder?

Oil paint uses linseed oil, Watercolor uses gum arabic, what about acrylic?

I read a book that says acrylics uses a kind of plastic as its binder. does not say what its chemical name whatsoever. The book refers to it as liquid plastic. What kind of plastic is it?

What is the name of the liquid plastic that is used in acrylics as its binder?
"Acrylic" is "polymethyl methacrylate" or PMMA.

Although acrylics are now well-known for the use in paints in their bulk form, acrylics are very hard and more transparent than glass. Acrylics are sold under trade names such as "plexiglas" and "lucite".
